Please consider the following statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bite injuries
- nearly half of these are children
- of those injured, 386,000 require medical treatment in an emergency department
- of those injured, about 12 die
- the rate of dog bite related injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9
- almost two-thirds of injuries to children ages 4 and under are to the head or neck
